Cycling the Slovenian Coast
Slovenia’s best-kept secret: a stunning coastal paradise that rivals the famous Cliffs of Dover, but with crystal-clear Adriatic waters and medieval charm that will take your breath away.
Lake Bled is Slovenia’s best-known sight. There’s a church on a small island, a castle on a cliff and the Julian Alps behind it. Bled tours help you see it without the usual hassle of parking, tickets and timing. This page covers the main options: pletna boat rides, Bled Castle visits, Vintgar Gorge, hiking, adventure activities and day trips to Bled from Ljubljana.

Bled is small. You can walk around the whole lake in about two hours. So why take a tour?
The island is only reachable by boat. The traditional way is a pletna, a flat wooden boat rowed by a local oarsman. The job has passed down through families for generations. The ride plus time on the island takes about 1.5 hours. On the island, you climb 99 steps to the Church of the Assumption and can ring the wishing bell. Church entry is usually a separate ticket.
Bled Castle sits on a cliff above the lake. It’s one of the oldest castles in Slovenia, first mentioned in 1011. Inside, there’s a small museum, a printing workshop and a wine cellar. Most people go for the view. You can walk up in about 15 minutes from the lakeside.
Vintgar Gorge is a short drive from Bled. A wooden walkway follows the Radovna River for about 1.6 km past rapids and pools. It ends at a waterfall. The gorge is closed in winter, and visits are often limited to time slots in summer. A tour usually sorts out the ticket and transport for you.
Bled is on the edge of Triglav National Park, so good trails start close to town. Short hikes to Ojstrica and Mala Osojnica give the classic postcard view over the island. Longer walks go to the Pokljuka plateau or into the mountains. Guided hikes help if you don’t know the trails. Find routes on the hiking tours in Slovenia page.
Seeing the lake from above is a popular add-on. Tandem paragliding flights take off from the hills nearby and land close to the lake. No experience is needed, but flights depend on the weather. See the options for tandem paragliding. For something with your feet closer to the ground, there are ziplining tours in the Bled area too.
The Sava Bohinjka River runs near Bled. In the warmer months, it’s used for rafting and canyoning. Trips are usually suitable for beginners, and guides provide wetsuits and helmets. Browse more adventure tours if you want a full active day.
Most visitors come to Bled for the day. A typical Bled day trip from Ljubljana includes the lake, a pletna ride, free time for cream cake and often Vintgar Gorge or Lake Bohinj. Group tours are the cheapest option. If you want your own schedule and driver, look at private sightseeing tours.
