Why Book a Tour in Bled?
Bled is small. You can walk around the whole lake in about two hours. So why take a tour?
- Transport. Bled is about 55 km from Ljubljana. Parking near the lake is limited and fills up fast in summer. Many tours include pickup.
- Combining sights. A tour can fit the lake, the gorge and Lake Bohinj into one day. That’s hard to do by bus.
- Activities. Paragliding, rafting, canyoning and ziplining need a licensed guide and gear.
- Background. A guide explains the island’s legends, the castle’s history and the pletna boat tradition.
Popular Types of Bled Tours
Pletna Boat Rides to Bled Island
The island is only reachable by boat. The traditional way is a pletna, a flat wooden boat rowed by a local oarsman. The job has passed down through families for generations. The ride plus time on the island takes about 1.5 hours. On the island, you climb 99 steps to the Church of the Assumption and can ring the wishing bell. Church entry is usually a separate ticket.
Bled Castle Visits
Bled Castle sits on a cliff above the lake. It’s one of the oldest castles in Slovenia, first mentioned in 1011. Inside, there’s a small museum, a printing workshop and a wine cellar. Most people go for the view. You can walk up in about 15 minutes from the lakeside.
Vintgar Gorge Tours
Vintgar Gorge is a short drive from Bled. A wooden walkway follows the Radovna River for about 1.6 km past rapids and pools. It ends at a waterfall. The gorge is closed in winter, and visits are often limited to time slots in summer. A tour usually sorts out the ticket and transport for you.
Hiking Tours Around Bled
Bled is on the edge of Triglav National Park, so good trails start close to town. Short hikes to Ojstrica and Mala Osojnica give the classic postcard view over the island. Longer walks go to the Pokljuka plateau or into the mountains. Guided hikes help if you don’t know the trails. Find routes on the hiking tours in Slovenia page.
Paragliding and Ziplining
Seeing the lake from above is a popular add-on. Tandem paragliding flights take off from the hills nearby and land close to the lake. No experience is needed, but flights depend on the weather. See the options for tandem paragliding. For something with your feet closer to the ground, there are ziplining tours in the Bled area too.
Rafting, Canyoning and Other Adventures
The Sava Bohinjka River runs near Bled. In the warmer months, it’s used for rafting and canyoning. Trips are usually suitable for beginners, and guides provide wetsuits and helmets. Browse more adventure tours if you want a full active day.
Day Trips to Bled from Ljubljana
Most visitors come to Bled for the day. A typical Bled day trip from Ljubljana includes the lake, a pletna ride, free time for cream cake and often Vintgar Gorge or Lake Bohinj. Group tours are the cheapest option. If you want your own schedule and driver, look at private sightseeing tours.
What to Combine with Bled
- Lake Bohinj: about 30 minutes away. It’s bigger, quieter and less built up than Bled. Savica Waterfall and the Vogel cable car are nearby.
- Vintgar Gorge: a 1–2 hour walk. Fits easily in the same day.
- Radovljica: a small old town 10 minutes away, known for its beekeeping museum and gingerbread.
- Ljubljana: less than an hour’s drive. Many people stay there and visit Bled for a day.

How to Choose the Right Bled Tour
Start with your time and energy level.
- A few hours: pletna ride to the island and a walk up to the castle.
- Full day: lake, island and castle, plus Vintgar Gorge or Lake Bohinj.
- Active day: a hike to a viewpoint in the morning and rafting or paragliding in the afternoon.
- Two days or more: stay in Bled and add Triglav National Park or the Soča Valley.
Before you book, check:
- Whether pickup from Ljubljana or your hotel is included.
- Whether the pletna ride, island church and castle tickets are in the price.
- How much free time you get at the lake.
- Group size and the cancellation policy.
- Weather rules for paragliding and rafting.
Best Time for Bled Tours
May, June and September are the best months. The weather is warm, all tours run and crowds are smaller. July and August are the busiest. Go early in the morning to avoid queues at the boats. You can swim in the lake in summer. Autumn brings colorful forests and fewer people. Winter is quiet, with a Christmas market by the lake in December. But Vintgar Gorge closes, and some activities don’t run.
Practical Tips
- Arrive before 10 am in summer. Parking and the pletna queue get busy fast.
- Bring cash. Some boats and small stands don’t take cards.
- Wear proper shoes for the viewpoint hikes. The trails are short but steep.
- Try the Bled cream cake (kremna rezina). Locals have been making it since the 1950s.
- Buses from Ljubljana run often, but a tour saves time if you want to see more than the lake.
